"Brink of Battle" Test

Table Terror Team and Franconian Tabletop Warlords finally met to play a test game with "Brink of Battle" rules. michi set up an old west town for the skirmish. Two posses of eight gunmen and 500 points were prepared by Walter. Values of retainers were different, but leaders were equal. Rules were explained and understood quickly. Start player is rolled and gains 3 bonus activations. Sounded great when reading the rules, but in fact it was of almost no effect in game. Alternating activation of single figures and reactive dice rolling kept both players busy all the time, which was rather nice, but the game did not catch speed due to that. The only dice used were D10s. Ranged combat as well as close combat was considered poor by all four gamers. We didn´t really like the ambush movement rule that allowed a concealed full distance movement. There should have been a negative distance modifier at least.
We concluded that we had great expectations due to the award winning credits of that game, but were deeply disappointed. However we had fun gaming at all!

View from the north. The outlaws are placed in the foreground on main street Rattlesnake.

View from the south along the main street. The sheriff and his deputies posse in front of the bank.
Blick von Süden: Das Aufgebot des Sheriffs nimmt vor der Bank Aufstellung.

It´s friday evening, therefore the railway lays dormant for the weekend.
Employees and citizens are all in the saloons, nobody else is seen in the streets.

The sheriff got news that some outlaws just entered town at the other end of tha main street.
He assembled his posse and got ready for a fight.

The outlaw leader is on the right in front of the barn door.
He will enter the barn with a fellow who will climb up to first floor.
Two riflemen will enter the engine shed on the left.
The four ladies will work their way along main street.

The riflemen are covered by the engine shed and gain ground rather rapidly.

The ladies move forward outside the shed.

The barn is empty and to be entered by the outlaws...

Shooting at the deputies from above was worth the effort.

Standing on high ground will always pay.

The boss has moved through the barn and takes cover behind a bakery.
His female companions assemble behind some barrels.

Meanwhile the first rifleman has made it through the engine shed into the open, but the deputies are already there!

The engines provie good hard cover for the deputies.

They even take position in the church.

A daredevil deputy moves along the railroad parallel to the main street and will be shot by the rifleman in the barn.

At this point we decided to end the game without a particular winner.
Outlaws managed to shock three deputies and kill one.
The sheriffs´ people shocked one outlaw.
We concluded that we don´t like the rules and won´t play Brink of Battle again.

Hi, this is Robert Faust, author of Brink of Battle. I'm responding to what I read in English on your blog, and had Google Translate convert the rest from German. I hope this works! ;)

I just read your battle report and am disappointed that you did not find it to your satisfaction. That being said, I wanted to add some insight to a few of the concerns you had mentioned, as if not done correctly, they could negatively impact your view of the rules.

For example, you used a 500 point force build in Period 3. This will give you a small number of figures, and if your Commander's Command Rating is equal to or greater than the number of models on your side, the excess generated by being the Player with the Edge is of no additional benefit. In a larger game with more figures per side it has a different impact. Also, I didn't see mention of the fact that the Player with the Edge cannot have his 1st Action that turn interrupted by the second Player's Break Action. This is a key differential from other rules sets. Not using the Edge & Break correctly is one of the most common factors that will sour player experience.

As for the Ambush Action, the downside is that you cannot do anything else. No shooting, no moving and shooting, no charging into combat. This game is all about fire & maneuver as all games at this level should be. All you can do is move and hide when doing the Ambush action. Ambush is negated by maneuvering your other models into direct Line of Sight, or coming within your model's Combat Rating in inches. And once your model takes any other type of action to move or shoot/charge, he loses his Ambush status and can become a target.

I'm not able to speak to your concerns regarding Close combat, since you didn't elaborate. This is one of the most robust features of the game. It is also one of the harder sections to wrap your head around, particularly if you have only played it once or twice.

We don't have a laundry list of modifiers as most other games do. I cannot control whether or not you like that, but my forward in the rulebook explains exactly why this isn't a game that counts bullets or biscuits. :)

If you have questions about the game you can always reach out via email to sitrep@brinkofbattle.com or join our Facebook group and get some good answers.

I would encourage you to do this because the system is really exceptional for the Early Gunpowder period such as French & Indian Wars skirmish. The rules for smoke from black powder weapons are particularly interesting.

I am not attempting to sway you if you have decided that one game was the sum total of play you want to give Brink of Battle. I do want to let you know we are working on some instructional videos that may help to see why we've had so much positive player feedback over the past 2 1/2 years. :)

Best regards,
Robert Faust

Dear Robert,
thank you very much for the detailed comment. We are very happy that you take our gamers opinion serious and take your time to make your points clear.
It is not that we talk your game bad or that we do not appreciate the work you put into it. We simply are a couple of ageing dads with challenging jobs and limited time to play our games. From time to time one of us proposes a new ruleset that we test to fit our desires, mostly to make sure how good the rules are that we used to date. It was recently that the very clever Pulp Alley rules replaced Blood&Swash for pulp games and we wanted to see whether your rules could replace B&S for Wild West too. We did not feel perfectly satisfied with them, but this is our opinion only. I am pretty sure that there is a wide variety of genres that can be played with Brink of Battle and probably it´s good for Western games too. Don´t be disappointed that your rules didn´t make it. It´s hard enough for a new ruleset to be tested by us at all, because if you play only once a month, you usually stick to what you are used to.
I ask for your understanding and apologise if I made you feel bad. It is not our intention to dis-/advertise games here. We only want to tell our honest opinion best we can - and English isn´t our native language, thererfore please forgive if something does read to straightforward. We want to be nice!
Kindest regards,

Michi

Hi Michi,

Oh, don't worry, I'm not offended. I realize that on occasion my rules might not be the 'fit' players are looking for. That's why there are so many games out there to explore. :)

I hope I didn't come across as defensive. It's the first time I've used Google Translator to read text in German, so please understand that I kept an open mind to some of the translation! :)

The reason I posted my comments was because I've had a few instances where someone didn't like the game, but it was because they accidentally left out a key rule or two. Once they got the rules straight they loved it.

And I do listen to player feedback, so always feel free to share your thoughts with me. Its how we can build better games!

All my best & Noch Weiter!

Your friend,

Bob Faust

Alright Bob, thanks for being generous to me and the boys. You weren´t defensive and we understand that you aim to get your game understood and used correctly. We think we did and tried to play it best we could. Good luck with it and keep on doing gaming stuff. Paint some more miniatures too, you´re rather good at it from what I´ve seen!
